Physiotherapy Treatments for Common Sports Injuries

Physiotherapy Treatments for Common Sports Injuries

Whether they’re a seasoned professional or a weekend warrior, sports injuries are a common setback for athletes. These injuries can range from minor strains to significant issues requiring surgery, but physiotherapy for sports injuries can help get back in the game no matter the severity.

At Park Physiotherapy and Foot Clinic, we regularly work with injured athletes. Today, we want to explore how our team helped three recent patients rehabilitate and return to their chosen support. (All names have been changed.)

Emma’s ACL Tear: Rebuilding Strength After Surgery

Emma, a college soccer player, tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a high-stakes game. Her injury was severe enough that she needed to undergo surgery to fully repair the damage. However, physiotherapy played an essential role in her post-surgical rehabilitation.

How Physiotherapy Helped Emma Back on the Soccer Field

Initial Recovery

  • Physiotherapy focused on reducing Emma’s swelling, improving her knee mobility, and easing her pain. We began guiding her through careful exercises to improve her range of motion.

Strength Training

  • As she improved, we moved on to targeted exercises that strengthened the muscles surrounding her knee, particularly her quads and hamstrings, to support the joint.

Balance and Agility Work

  • Toward the end of her program, we introduced dynamic movements like balance drills and light running to prepare her for soccer’s demands.

Today, Emma is back on the field, playing with the same intensity as before. Physiotherapy provided her with a safe, structured path to recovery, minimizing the risk of re-injury.

Liam’s Pitcher’s Shoulder: Relieving Pain and Improving Performance

Liam, a competitive baseball pitcher, began experiencing shoulder pain that worsened with each game. He had developed pitcher’s shoulder, a common overuse injury caused by repetitive throwing motions. Physiotherapy for sports injuries helped him address the root of the problem and improve his performance.

Liam’s Comprehensive Treatment Program

Pain Management

  • Hands-on manual therapy techniques helped reduce his pain and gradually restore his mobility. We also incorporated some additional pain management methods, such as acupuncture.

Therapeutic Exercise

  • We provided Liam with exercises targeting his rotator cuff muscles and shoulder blade stability to improve overall function and prevent further injury.

Improving Shoulder Mechanics

  • We also analyzed Liam’s throwing motion, identified poor mechanics contributing to the injury, and then worked with him to make the necessary corrections.

With consistent physiotherapy, Liam resolved his pain and improved his pitching accuracy and power.

Sophie’s Ankle Sprain: Returning to Full Mobility

Sophie, a recreational runner, twisted her ankle during a trail run, resulting in a severe sprain. Initially unable to bear weight on her foot, she turned to physiotherapy for a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. This was a good call, as improperly rehabilitating her injury would make her more likely to suffer future ankle sprains.

How We Helped Sophie Address Her Sprain

Early Intervention

  • We combined compression with gentle range-of-motion exercises to reduce swelling and stiffness.

Rebuilding Strength

  • Once the swelling subsided, we helped Sophie strengthen her ankle and surrounding muscles, using exercises like calf raises and resistance band work.

Balance Training

  • Balance exercises helped restore her ankle stability and decreased the risk of future injuries.

Thanks to physiotherapy, Sophie is back to running on her favorite trails with improved ankle strength and confidence.
